Azerbaijani parliament designs bill defining status of Azerbaijani forces involved in peacekeeping activities

21 July 2009 [17:03] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani parliament is designing a bill which will identify status of the Azerbaijani forces involved in peacekeeping operations, parliamentary defense and security committee head Aydin Mirzazade said.
“The bill will be brought up for discussions in the autumn session as soon as it is designed,” Mirzazade said.

“Azerbaijani military men involved in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq fulfilled their mission successfully. Over the past 10 years dozens of our soldiers and officers were conferred on highest awards of countries where they served. The number of Azerbaijani peacekeepers is growing from year to year. All this necessitated a special law on Azerbaijani peacekeepers,” the MP said.

The bill will reflect the status of the peacekeepers, their service term, supply and other issues, he said.

Mirzazade said while designing the bill the experience gained by Azerbaijan, as well as international law and practice of foreign countries will be taken into consideration.
