Interview Day.Az with deputy of the Georgian Parliament David Darchiashvili.
- How would you comment on the outcome of Saakashvili's visit to Baku?- I would assess the results of the visit as very positive. They reiterated the high level of friendship and partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan. I am confident that the opening of new flight Baku-Batumi will have only positive impact on the development and strengthening of bilateral ties. I would call the co-operation in economy, in particular, the transport of energy and reaching agreement on the Nabucco project as a sign of strategic partnership between our countries. It is very important for all of us.
- As you know, there has been reached an agreement on the construction of gas holder on the territory of Georgia ...- I can say the only thing: it is difficult to overstate the political and economic significance in this issue. The most important thing is that this decision will contribute to ensuring energy security in the region, especially Georgia. For Azerbaijan, I think this idea is also very beneficial.
- In his past visits Saakashvili called our country as merely a friend while this time he said that Azerbaijan is a closest friend to Georgia. What do you think this message of the Georgian president mean? Does it imply mean a new direction in relations between two countries?- I think that the history of these relations since the independence of our republic after the collapse of the Soviet Union confirms the statement by Saakashvili. Georgia has always attached great importance to good-neighborly relations with its neighbor Azerbaijan. I can recall a paper of the National Security Concept of Georgia, adopted in 2005, where the importance of the Georgian-Azerbaijani friendship was clearly stressed. Nevertheless I do not think that there have appeared any special changes in the external policy of Georgia.
