Representative of Dashnaktsutun party: "Armenia should force Azerbaijan to sign a peace treaty by the help of the OSCE Minsk Group"

28 August 2008 [17:28] - TODAY.AZ
Armenia should review some vectors of external policy, considers deputy of Armenian parliament from the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnatsutun Artsvik Minasyan.
"We should conduct a flexible external policy in order to attain recognition of Nagorno Karabakh without initiating a conflict with friendly countries", said Minasyan at a press conference on Thursday.

He noted that the country should propose to the world society the mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, similar to South Ossetia and Nagorno Karabakh.

In turn, the secretary of the parliamentary faction "Flourishing Armenia" Aram Safaryan noted that the said issues should be discussed in the National Assembly.

"In this sense, our main task is recognition of Nagorno Karabakh and the parliament should primarily discuss these opportunities", said Safaryan.

He noted that Georgia became the center of the clash of interests of the West and Russia, which led to such complicated results and Armenia's task is to avert the possibility of such a situation for itself.

"South Ossetia's experience showed that the world society does not want to deal with the issue of the unrecognized republics unless there are ethnic cleansing and military actions. Will the West wait for similar events in Nagorno Karabakh to settle this problem?", said Safaryan.

The Armenian deputy noted that considering the events in South Ossetia, Armenia should force Azerbaijan to sign a peace treaty, ensuring security in the region, by the help of the OSCE Minsk Group.

"If Azerbaijan refuses to conclude such a treaty, it would mean that Baku counts on the forced resolution of the conflict, therefore, we will have to ensure other guarantees of security", said Safaryan.
