Vafa Quluzade: "Dmitri Medvedev has not attained any of the set goals during his official visit to Azerbaijan"

04 July 2008 [10:25] - TODAY.AZ
"There was nothing new or definite during the first official visit of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev to Azerbaijan.

The signed agreement on strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia is no more than a paper and formality, while talks on prospects for further expansion of economic and cultural ties between our countries are just an ordinary diplomatic dialogue between the leaders of the two countries", said famous political scientist Vafa Qulizade, commenting on the results of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's visit to Azerbaijan.

He said Dmitri Medvedev failed to reach the main goal - to agree on Gazprom's purchase of Azerbaijani gas and our country's rejection in Nabucco project, he also failed to get guarantees of the Azerbaijani President that our country will not join NATO.

"On the whole, it is clear that Dmitri Medvedev failed to attain any of the set goals, which is not surprising as President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev skillfully defends the national interests of our country and does not lower our country to the level of Russia's outpost in the Caucasus, as is done by the Armenian leadership", said Quluzade.

As for possible mechanisms of Russia's pressure of Azerbaijan, the political scientist announced that the Kremlin has once attempted to impose pressure on official Baku through speculations on the unsettled Nagorno Karabakh conflict, as well as other actions up to the attempts to destabilize situation in our country.

"Today Russia does not have mechanisms of pressure on Azerbaijan. It can not resume Karabakh war, as Azerbaijan is secured with West's interests in production of hydrocarbons in the territory of our country.

Russia also can not offer anything new for the fair resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict as in this case it risks to loss its outpost in the Caucasus- Armenia, as well.

On the whole, Russia faces great many of problems, from corruption up to weak army, and the growing gap between rich people and ordinary population of the country, while the attempts to settle its economic problem by careless selling of its energy resources to the West were unsuccessful.

The world is aware that Russia's ambitions do not comply with its abilities. It means that we need not fear any real demonstrations of pressure on Azerbaijan by this country", resumed Quluzade.
