PACE President: "It is incorrect to say that PACE resolution on Azerbaijan smells of oil"

02 July 2008 [13:25] - TODAY.AZ
"I have come to Baku with a resolution which was adopted in PACE regarding situation in Azerbaijan and during the meetings I also discussed issues, fixed in the document, said PACE president Lluis Maria de Puig.
He said during the meetings in Baku he discussed release of imprisoned reporters, as well as some other imprisoned persons.

"Arrests of journalists for their views are inadmissible in a country, which is a member of the Council of Europe", said the PACE president.

At the same time Puig noted that CE does not take into account Azerbaijan's oil reserves in the relations with it and it would be incorrect to say that the PACE resolution smells of oil.

"I admit that there are some countries, which are interested in Azerbaijani gas and oil and maintain special relations with this country. Moreover, I understand that Azerbaijan has an important geographic position. Yet, the Council of Europe, adopting its resolutions, does not take into account the economic interests and adopts the document only based on democratic principles", said Puig.
