Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry receives GUAM Secretary General - UPDATED

The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mamedyarov received the Secretary General of GUAM Valery Chechelashvili visiting Baku.

Secretary General of the International Organization for Democracy and Economic Development-GUAM Valery Chechelashvili held a meeting with the Deputy Foreign Minister and the national coordinator in GUAM Araz Azimov.

The visitor said that the visit aims to sum up the first half year of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in GUAM and development of plans for the second half, that is until June.

"The priorities will remain the same as scheduled previously during the Baku summit of GUAM that is increasing the influence of the organization on the international level, implementation of projects in the economic sphere and, naturally, continuation of the mobilization of the world community for the settlement of conflicts".

V.Chechelashvili announced that the next meeting of the presidents of the GUAM member-states will be held in Tbilisi in June or July of 2008: "External cooperation is a GUAM priority".

According to the Georgian diplomat, the traditional cooperation with GUAM will soon involve Poland along with the uSA and Japan. The issues of both economic and political cooperation will be discussed at a Guam meeting with Poland to be held soon in Warsaw. The main priorty in the cooperation is a support of initiatives on the peaceful settlement of the conflicts.

"We are now carrying out an active work for the support of the UN General Assembly of our resolution".
 
According to the Secretary General, several countries may not support the resolution, yet it has been developed in accordance with the principles of international law: "I think the majority of countries will support us".

According to the press service for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan, the sides discussed the planned joint projects and considered it necessary to continue the organizational processes of GUAM.

The meeting participants discussed the meeting of national coordinators of GUAM to be held in Kiev on February 13-14, establishment of interparliamentary ties of the organization, as well as preliminary questions for the GUAM summit planned to be held in Tbilisi in mid 2008.

Touching upon the resolution of the GUAM countries on frozen conflicts in UN, E.Mamedyarov expressed confidence that the resolution will be approved and it would be correct to recognize the right for self-determination in the framework of the territorial integrity of the country.
