European Commission president: European Union will continue to closely follow Abbas Lisani's case

European Commission's President Jose Manuel Barroso stated the issue on Abbas Lisani is being closely followed.

European Union's number one official replied to the appeal by Paulo Casaca, Portuguese politician, member of the European Parliament & member of the Iranian delegation of the European Parliament.

Sweden-Azerbaijan Youth Federation chairwoman Nargiz Nadai told the APA the European Commission's president has made a decision on closer investigation into the detention of Abbas Lisani, one of the activities of the South Azerbaijan national movement in Iran.

Nadai said this decision is very important, as the president's position reflect the positions of the European Commission member states.

Mr.Barroso said in his reply that he is informed of the case on Abbas Lisani, who has been detained for participating in peaceful demonstrations for cultural and language rights of Iranian Azerbaijanis.

The Commission president also writes that the European Union through diplomatic channels is closely following the situation of human rights, especially the rights of ethnic minorities to native language and cultural rights in Iran.
