High time to discuss Turkey's admission to GUAM

07 March 2007 [22:22] - TODAY.AZ
"It is high time to discuss Turkey's admission to GUAM. Taking into account several principles, our party proposed Turkey's admission to GUAM. Turkey has normal relations with all GUAM member states. Turkey is experienced for the level of democracy," leader of Joint Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Gudret Hasanguliyev told.

He said that Turkey's admission to GUAM will show that GUAM’s borders are not limited to CIS states. It is important both from the aspect of bringing GUAM states closer to NATO and European Union, APA reports.

"It will be good if this problem is discussed during Turkish Prime Minister Rajab Tayyib Erdogan’s visit to Azerbaijan. I think that GUAM should not be afraid of territorial problems, but should take this step to pursue active policy in the region," he said.

Hasanguliyev considers that the proposal of protection of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipelines by GUAM peacekeepers is one of the main causes of Turkey's admission to GUAM.

"If this proposal is realized, there will be more need for Turkey’s admission to GUAM," he said.

The party leader noted that the forum of Turkish and Azerbaijani Diasporas to be held in Baku on March 9 is of great importance.

"Turkish Diaspora Organizations should contribute to the formation and strengthening of Azerbaijani Diaspora Organizations. They have more serious relations with the countries they live in. Joint cooperation of Diaspora Organizations of both countries will be more expedient," he said.
