US military spending accounts for 40% of global expenditure

World military expenditure in 2006 is estimated to have reached $1.2 trillion and this corresponds to 2.5 per cent of world GDP, Stockholm International Peace researches Institute report says.

The USA takes the first place in the world for its military expenses. The USA, responsible for about 40 per cent of military expenditures, is the principal determinant of the current world trend, and its military expenditure now accounts $518b, APA reports.

Great Britain is the second for military spending accounting $48.3b. It should be noted that there is differences between the reports of SIRPI and US CIA.

CIS report says that China occupies the second place after US for its military expenditures-$80b. Whereas SIRPI in reference to official Beijing declared that the military spending of China was $36,7b.

France is the third ($45-46b) and is followed by Japan, Germany, Italy, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Russia. Russia military expenditure was $24b last year. Military expenditure boosted in US, China, India, Russia, Venezuela, argentine and Chile. SIRPI has recorded only 21% of increase among CIS states in 2006. Georgia is leader after Russia in CIS region. In the report period Georgia has boosted the military spending by 5 times, that is $341m (5% of GDP). It is followed by Kazakhstan ($1, 22m), Uzbekistan ($902), Azerbaijan ($800) and Turkmenistan.

Tajikistan ($52.2b) and Kyrgyzstan ($40.4) spend the least for military expenditure.
