President Aliyev says Karabakh dispute nearing resolution

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the country was close to breaking the impasse with Armenia over the disputed enclave of Nagorno Karabakh.

His comments on Azeribaijani state television on Wednesday follow talks with his Armenian counterpart Robert Kocharian on November 28 on the sidelines of a CIS summit in Minsk.

Predominantly Armenian Karabakh seceded from Soviet Azerbaijan in 1988, triggering a war that claimed about 30,000 lives. RFE/RL
