Ali Hasanov: "No need for Golden Amnesty"

03 May 2006 [09:06] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani government considers the problem of alleged political prisoners closed.

President's Administration socio-political officer Ali Hasanov told journalists that the government has struck the issue of political prisoners off the agenda, however some newspapers and NGOs are trying to draw international attention to this issue again.

"All alleged political prisoners were released by a presidential pardon decree. There can be no problem on political prisoners in a country joined Council of Europe. Those who think they are political detainees can appeal to the European Court. So, this issue is not active now. As to the representatives of various organizations arrested in fall last year, I can not comment on this issue until the court makes a decision about them."

According to APA, he thinks that a lot of people were released by pardon decrees within 10 years and there is no need for "Golden Amnesty".

"This means all prisoners should be released. Of course, this issue is not on agenda and there is no need for it."
