Ramiz Mehdiyev: “Existing elections code allows for democratic elections, state official”

24 July 2005 [08:30] - TODAY.AZ
The current Elections Code and format of election commissions allows holding free and democratic elections, said Ramiz Mehdiyev, the head-of-staff of the President’s Office.
According to Mehdiyev, the goal of the opposition is to establish election commissions on parity basis in order to recall its members from the commissions and violate the elections process.

According to Mehdiyev, presidential decree dated 11 May offers favorable basis for free and fair elections.

Touching upon possible return of Rasul Guliyev, ex-Speaker, and Ayaz Mutalibov, ex-President, Mehdiyev said that lawsuits were opened on their cases. «No one stands on their way. They can return to Azerbaijan any time and defend themselves in the court. If they are pleaded no guilty, they can participate in the elections,” the head-of-staff of the President’s Administration stressed.

Mehdiyev also refuted the announcement on issue of the amnesty. The same time he asserted the reports on changes within the structure of the President’s Office, noting the establishment of bodies on agriculture and military consultant.
