Ronald Wegener: “Democratic elections possible in Azerbaijan”

?zerbaijan fulfilled many of its commitments before the Council of Europe (CE), which allows holding democratic parliamentary elections in the country.
With such a statement a leader of the AGO Monitoring group of the CE Committee of Ministers, a German diplomat, Ronald Wegener spoke out on 30 June, Trend reports.

The monitoring group leader noted that the CE is interested in formation of election commissions on parity basis and hopes, that the issue will be solved positively. “We hope, that representatives of opposition parties will be broadly represented in the election commissions”, Wegener noted.

«Complete solution of the political prisoners’ problem will raise the rating of the country’s leadership, Wegener said, noting, that Ilham Aliyev attaches a special importance for ensuring open and transparent elections, as the condition for the development of the democratic society in Azerbaijan.

In conclusion, Ronald Wegener noted, that it is not correct to talk in advance of any appraisals of the November parliamentary elections at the PACE level. «The CE assessment will be given only after study of the reports of international expert groups”, concluded the AGO group leader.
