American Senator starts visit to Azerbaijan

A visit of the American Senator, Charles Hagel starts to Azerbaijan, the report of the US Embassy’s press-service says.
The press-release points out, that the Hagel’s visit will demonstrate the adherence of the American Congress and the people to continue ties between the USA and Azerbaijan in democracy, security, economic development and energy cooperation.

Senator Hagel represents the state of Nebraska. He was elected to the Senate in 1996 and is member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from the Republican Party.

After growing up in a small Nebraska town, he and his brother Tom volunteered for the Army in the late 1960s, and served as infantrymen together in Vietnam. Senator Hagel was awarded two Purple Hearts after suffering serious wounds in combat. After returning to the United States, he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1971, with a degree in history, before working as a Congressional aide and lobbyist. In the early 1980s, President Reagan nominated Senator Hagel to serve as the Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration.

In the mid-1980s he founded a successful cellular telephone company. Prior to his election to the Senate, Senator Hagel was the president of an Omaha-based investment bank.

He is also member of the Senate Committee on banking, housing and urban affairs. Moreover, Hagel is also member of the Senate Rules Committee and the Committee on Intelligence.
