Illinois mayor issues proclamation marking Azerbaijani Independence Day

As a result of an annual letter campaign by U.S. Azeris Network (USAN), the Governor of Illinois Pat Quinn issued a Proclamation on the Day of Independence of Azerbaijan. The proclamation addressed to the members of USAN and Azerbaijanis around the world mentions the fact of declaration of independence of Azerbaijan on October 18, 1991. It also notes the geographical details about Azerbaijan, stating Azerbaijan “has an area of 33,400 square miles, including the exclave of Nakhchivan and the Karabakh region” and underlines the unconditional recognition by the United States of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, state sovereignty and its independence. Whereas every year for the last 22 years 40 millions around the globe have observed October 18 as the Day of Independence of Azerbaijan and “in remembrance of the contributions of their forefathers to the spread of freedom and democracy in the Caucasus and greater region”, Governor proclaims October 18 as the Day of Independence of Azerbaijan in Illinois.
