Chairman of Lithuanian Seimas Committee makes statement on Karabakh conflict

22 March 2013 [10:45] - TODAY.AZ
Benediktas Juodka, Chairman of the Lithuanian Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, made a special statement on Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Juodka reaffirms the unwavering position of the Seimas regarding all the unsettled conflicts in the South Caucasus and stresses the need to adhere to the universally recognised principles of international law, laid down in Article 135.1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, the United Nations Charter and the Helsinki Final Act.

Juodka also notes that documents adopted by the UN General Assembly and Security Council, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe and the European Parliament consistently call on the sides to the unsettled dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh to amicably resolve the conflict in conformity with principles of international law.

Chairman Juodka stresses that the Eastern Partnership will be one of Lithuania's priorities during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013.

He insists that unsettled conflicts in the Eastern Partnership countries hamper political and economic development in partner countries, hindering their mutual trust and cooperation.

Therefore, conflict resolution needs to be among the most important policy objective of the EU and international organisations.

Chairman Juodka believes that the deepening of Armenia's and Azerbaijan's relations with the EU through signing association agreements opens up new avenues for searching the ways to address the conflict.

Juodka commends the role of the OSCE Minsk Group in mediation on the pathway to conflict resolution.
