A package of four bilateral agreements, including the signing of a joint declaration on friendship and strategic partnership is expected to be signed within Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic's visit to Azerbaijan on Feb. 7-9, Serbian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zoran Vayovich said at a briefing in Baku on Tuesday.
"This is the Serbian president's first official visit to Azerbaijan," the ambassador said. "It is planned to open a monument to the great Serbian-American physicist, scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla in one of the central parks of Baku and to open an exhibition of famous Yugoslav writer and diplomat Ivo Andric called 'Ivo Andric - writer and/or diplomat' with the support of Belgrade City Museum and the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy," he said.
He added that Serbia and Azerbaijan support each other in the international arena. A fundamental position between the two countries on such principles on the rule of international law as territorial integrity and sovereignty remains unchanged.
"Two more new documents were added to the legal basis between the countries in 2012," Vayovich said. "In January it was 'Agreement on economic and technological cooperation between the Serbian government and the Azerbaijani government'. It ensures broad opportunities for further economic cooperation between the two countries.
"The agreement on the Azerbaijani government's allocation of a loan worth 308 million euros to the Serbian government to construct the Corridor-11 section of the Lig Prelin road was signed in Baku in February. Currently, the legal basis between the two countries includes 21 international treaties establishing a framework of bilateral cooperation at various levels. Several projects cover various areas of cooperation from law enforcement body cooperation to professional topics and agreements in the field of science and technology."
He added that a meeting has been effectively held within the intergovernmental Serbian-Azerbaijani commission on trade and economic cooperation, a second in Baku in November 2012 at the Serbian-Azerbaijani business forum. A protocol of the commission on trade and economic cooperation was signed between co-chairmen - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal and External Trade of the Republic of Serbia R.Lyaich and Azerbaijani Minister of Economic Development S. Mustafayev.
A natural result of the on-going Serbian-Azerbaijani dialogue is the active work of the Serbian-Azerbaijani intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation (the first meeting was held in Belgrade in November 2011) and the increased number of the intensive contacts between the business circles of the two countries which was a positive outcome of bilateral trade turnover, he said. Trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $35 million as of 2012.
