Moscow to continue active efforts on Karabakh conflict resolution

28 December 2012 [14:59] - TODAY.AZ
Russia will continue its active efforts on resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the country's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with "Interfax" agency.

"Russia will continue its active efforts for a political resolution of the conflicts in the CIS space, and above all, the Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria conflicts," Russian Foreign Ministry's website quotes Lavrov as saying on Friday.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions regarding the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
