'Holding European Olympic Games in Baku is Azerbaijan’s success '

Holding the first European Olympic Games in Azerbaijan is due to the success of the Azerbaijani people and the outcome of policy pursued by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Oqtay Asadov said at the plenary session today.

While Azerbaijan was putting forward the initiative of holding the Summer Olympic Games, it was stressed that the country has no experience in this field. The Organisation for European Games will demonstrate that the country is able to carry out such prestigious events, Asadov said.

Deputy Chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan party, executive secretary Ali Ahmadov said that the first European Olympic Games in Baku testifies to Azerbaijan's growing authority in the world.

"Azerbaijan has become a venue for international events," he said.

A decision was made to hold the first European Games in Baku at the 41st General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee. The Games will be held in 2015.

The General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee made the decision to hold the first European Games in Baku as a result of a secret ballot by 38 of 48 votes (eight - against, two - abstained).
