Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution to be mulled in Germany

22 November 2012 [18:48] - TODAY.AZ
Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) under the Azerbaijani President, Farhad Mammadov will leave for an official visit to Frankfurt, where he will attend and address the international conference "Nagorno-Karabakh peace process: role of justice in conflict resolution", which is organized by the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt and will be held on Nov.23-27, the CSS said on Thursday.

The four-day conference is expected to bring together leading politicians and scientists.

The conference will focus on justice in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution, which lacks for adequate attention in political and academic debates.

The conference aims at analysing conditions of the conflicting parties.

Famous Azerbaijani and Armenian scientists are expected to address the conference following German experts' speeches on the topic.

Proposals to resolve the conflict will be also discussed between the two countries' representatives.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
