Portugal plans to continue to act with Azerbaijan in the political sphere, Foreign Minister Paulo Portas said at a press conference after talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov on Thursday in Baku.
The positions of the two countries are the same: both countries are members of the UN Security Council, speak with one voice on Iran and Syria, Portas said.
"The situation in Syria was discussed during the meeting with my Azerbaijani counterpart. We expressed concern about the situation in this country, and agreed that the longer civil war lasts, the harder it will be to restore stability," Portas said.
He noted that the Iranian nuclear issue was also discussed during the talks. "I believe that this issue can be resolved by diplomatic means," Portash said. He added that Portugal intends to further develop relations with Azerbaijan in all spheres.
The two countries agreed to strengthen the legal framework, establish an intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, the Foreign Minister of Portugal said.
