Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reports on tense situation on contact line

06 June 2012 [11:03] - TODAY.AZ
The situation on the contact line between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops remains tense, and ceasefire is violated in all directions, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said.

Armenian Armed Forces violated ceasefire in all directions of the contact line from 18:00 on June 5 to 08:00 on June 6, the Defense Ministry said.

Despite the intense firing, the Azerbaijani side suffered no losses, no one was wounded. Attacks of the enemy were repressed in all cases.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the US - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
