Azerbaijan Republic Day marked in Italy

Azerbaijan`s embassy to Italy has organized an official reception in Malta to celebrate the 28 May – Republic Day.

According to the embassy, Maltese president George Abela, Minister of Foreign Affairs Tonio Borg, as well as members of government and the parliament, representatives of scientific-research centers, mass media, and diplomatic corps accredited in Malta have attended the event.

Opening the ceremony, ambassador Vagif Sadigov spoke of the history of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Touching upon Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the ambassador said 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territory has been occupied by Armenia leaving more than a million of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs homeless, and stressed “for all that Azerbaijan is a leading country in the Caucasus.”

Sadigov noted the existing opportunity for expansion of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Malta that established 17 years ago. He expressed confidence for further deepening of friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries.

President of Malta George Abela expressed assurance the celebration of the 28 May – Azerbaijan`s Republic Day will make a contribution in development of bilateral relations.
He congratulated Azerbaijani leadership and people on the holiday.

The speeches were followed with Anthems of Azerbaijan and Malta. The attendees also watched a film on Azerbaijan, and were presented with books and journals about the country.
