Azerbaijani Presidents signs order to award National Security Ministry’s employees with order and medals

Under the Presidential Order issued on April 9, 2012, for the courage and valor displayed during special operations in Ganja, the second largest city of Azerbaijan, special secret unit "Gartal” (“Eagle”) of the Ministry of National Security was awarded with orders and medals.

Under the Order, Colonel Elshad Guliyev was awarded the "Flag of Azerbaijan" (posthumously), and other members of the group received medals "For the Motherland", "For Valour" and "For Military Merit."

As AzerTAc earlier reported, secret services of Azerbaijan have detained 17 members of the armed group in an attempt to organize terrorist acts in Azerbaijan.

As a result of operational activities, Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan have exposed and arrested 17 members of an armed group in connection with suspected terrorist acts, series of sabotage and subversion to disrupt social stability and sow panic among people. The operations were conducted in Baku, Ganja and Sumgayit, as well as in Gakh, Zagatala, Sheki and Gusar regions of Azerbaijan.

During the operation in these regions, the Azerbaijani secret intelligence service agents have found and seized four AKM-type submachine guns, a RPK-type machine gun, two Makarov pistols, one revolver-type pistol, one Stechkin pistol, a rifle, six full pistol clips, 300 cartridges of various calibers, 31 hand grenades, 15 explosive devices with remote control, and other ammunition, as well as the publications and promotional materials on terrorism.

In the second largest Azerbaijani city of Ganja (375 km from Baku), agents of the special secret unit "Gartal" (Eagle) of the Ministry of National Security faced armed resistance. Several suspected terrorists opened fire on agents, and threw a hand grenade at them. As a result, one agent was killed and three others seriously injured.

In connection with an incident, Main Investigation Department of the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan has opened a criminal case under the relevant articles.
