Israeli expert says France’s example is not ‘contagious’

06 February 2012 [11:03] - TODAY.AZ
Israel has never denied the fact of death of the Armenian population in Turkey during the WWI, Israeli expert Avigdor Eskin said, while commenting on the French law concerning the criminalization of denial of the «Armenian genocide".

However, he stressed, here is the matter not about the recognition of the death of the Armenian population, but the recognition of the Armenian version of the tragic events.

"Many historians have rightly questioned the validity of the term" genocide "in relation to the situation when the Armenians raised a rebellion in Turkey during the war, and the government deported them in response,” he added.

Eskin said Israel is aware of the general anti-Semitic propaganda of the Armenian nationalists. "It includes a monstrous accusation that the Jews and the Zionists were behind the tragedy of 1915. Do you think that the Knesset can recognize it? We have deputies working for the Armenian lobby, as Ze’ev Elkin. But most MPs are independent on this issue. Therefore, we can confidently say that the example of France will not be contagious in case of Israel,” he stated.
