‘Iran uses Armenia as lever to pressure on Azerbaijan’

25 January 2012 [12:51] - TODAY.AZ
Iran is in deep isolation, and therefore some kind of normal relations with at least Armenia is very important for Tehran. The member of the Azerbaijani parliamentary committee on international and inter-parliamentary relations, political scientist, Rasim Musabekov, stated about this while commenting on Iran’s relations with Armenia.

He said Iran lacks normal relations with neighbors. Iran indirectly supports Armenia - communicating economic contacts, which, on the one hand, beneficial for Iran, as Tehran provides Yerevan with gas, some petroleum products not for free. Armenia pays for all these and these supplies are beneficial for Iranian merchants, he said.

"In parallel supporting Armenia, Iran also uses these relations as a lever of pressure on Azerbaijan. Armenia is more afraid of growing Azerbaijan that chose the secular path of development. And this also threatens Iran. Because, for example Armenia absolutely has no effect on internal situation, Azerbaijan creates certain ideological and political difficulties for the Islamist regime. Iran does not need a strong Azerbaijan, which develops in the direction of Europe. Therefore, any obstacles created before Azerbaijan, including the aggression of Armenia, are quite acceptable for Iran,” Musabekov said.

To pursue such a policy and at the same time to state that Iran supports Muslim solidarity and Azerbaijan, is some kind of ambiguity, he noted.
