Baku to host 2nd Int'l Festival of Novruz

Baku will host the second International Novruz Festival in Icherisheher (Old City) on March 20-23.

Loved by many people, Novruz is celebrated by millions of people thought the world including Azerbaijan, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and other eastern countries. The holiday signifies arrival of spring.

Many local and foreign tourists, as well as representatives of Turkey, Russia, Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are expected to visit the hilarious festive in Baku.

During the four-day festival, “Maidan Bazaar” to be set up near the Gosha Gala Gates will feature Azerbaijan’s and foreign country’s stands, which will demonstrate products of national craftsmanship and decorative arts, as well as souvenirs. The participants will also view some films, reflecting the cultures of their countries.

Baku residents and guests will enjoy many interesting events, including the performance of Azerbaijani wrestlers - Pehlevans -, rope-walkers and magicians, as well as artists of the children's theater.

The main heroes of Novruz, Kosa and Kechel will entertain not only children, bur also adults with their jokes.

Last year, Baku for the first time hosted the International Novruz Festival, which was warmly welcomed both by Baku residents and foreign tourists, who enjoyed many interesting events and got acquainted with the history and traditions of Novruz.

In 2009, Novruz was included in UNESCO’s representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and from this time March 21 has been declared as the International Day of Novruz.

Novruz is a festive of joy and good mood. It’s a holiday of equality and friendship. It is also a feast for sweet tooth, as many delicious national sweets including pakhlava, shakarbura, gogal and badambura are cooked and served at the festive table.

Preparation to Novruz begins a month before the holiday and this year, the first Tuesday or Su Chershenbesi (Water Tuesday), falls on February 24.

It is one of the four Tuesdays, each of which is dedicated to the awakening of one of the natural elements called Su Chershenbesi (Water Tuesday), Od Chershenbesi (Fire Tuesday), Torpaq Chershenbesi (Earth Tuesday), and Hava or Akhir Chershenbesi (Wind or Last Tuesday).
