Baku welcomes Int'l Theatre conference

The opening ceremony of the third International Theatre conference was held in Azerbaijan State Musical Theatre on November 5.

The event was attended by prominent public officials, art and culture figures, film directors, actors and actress, as well as writers and leaders of creative teams.

The conference attracts more participants each year and this year about 150 theatrical figures and specialists in this area from approximately 50 countries took part.

Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan's Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev said the third International Theatre conference, devoted to the topic "Place of the theater in the system of multiculturalism and universal values" is being held in accordance with state program on "Azerbaijani Theatre in 2009-2019."

"The state program has became an important step in development of our theatres. It sets the development perspectives of Azerbaijani theatre art during a10-year period.

"Thereby, the national theatre, as a national cultural heritage, can preserve the rich artistic heritage, promote the human and national values, implement reforms in the theatre's field, support young talents, prepare personnel for their jobs, improve the system of training, serve the goals of progress and update the national theater art to occupy a worthy place in the international theater space," Garayev said.

For the past years, Azerbaijani theaters have become members of the international theater organizations and associations. The national theaters are participating in international festivals and spectacles by Azerbaijani dramatists are staged abroad.

The speakers stressed that the conference is an important cultural bridge among nations, which also bring together many theater lovers. They include: Azerbaijan's state adviser on Multinational, Multicultural and Religious Affairs Kamal Abdulla, General Secretary of the International Association of UNIMA puppet theaters Jacques Trudeau, President of the International Association of Children's and Youth Theatre ASSITEJ Yvette Hardy, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Dagestan Republic of the Russian Federation Murad Hajiyev, Secretary General of the International Association of Theatre Critics Michelle Weiss, President of the International Organization of theater artists, technicians and architects Louis Janssen and board member of the International Federation of Theatre Research IFTR Bori Daussa-Pastor.

They also noted that this conference is a true theatrical celebration.

The two-day conference will include plenary sessions, reports as well as bilateral meetings and master classes. Participants will also be acquainted with the works of Azerbaijani cultural and art institutions.

The first International Theatre Conference, held on November 7-8, 2010, was carried out under the theme "The World theatrical process in the 21th century: problems, prospects and alternatives", while the second was held in 2012.
