Verdi's "Aida" comes to Baku

Azerbaijan's State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre will stage the legendary Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida" on April 26, the theatre reported.

The opera will be conducted by People's Artist of Azerbaijan, professor Javanshir Jafarov.

Young soloist of the theatre Chinara Shirin will play the role of Aida, while the role of Radames will be performed by soloist of the Georgian State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, People's Artist, laureate of international competitions Teymuraz Gugushvili.

Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Sabina Asadova will perform in the role of Amneris and Honored Artist of Georgia, winner of the 2nd Bulbul International Vocal Competition Sulhan Gvelesiani will perform as Amonasro.

The performance will also feature leading soloists of the Opera and Ballet Theatre, People's Artists of Azerbaijan Ali Asgarov and Anton Fershtandt.

The performance is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of People's Artist of the USSR Lutfiyar Imanov.

Aida, is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, based on a scenario often attributed to French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette.

Aida was first performed at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo on 24 December 1871, conducted by Giovanni Bottesini.
