International conference on plant quarantine kicks off in Baku

The 49th conference of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) has today kicked off in Baku.

31 representatives from 21 countries (Germany, England, France, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and etc) have attended the conference, which will last 3 days.

Director General. European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) Ringolds Arnitis, representative of European Commission Harry Arijs and 3 international experts are taking part in the conference. The agenda of the conference includes discussion of standards approved in the sphere of quarantine and protection of plant, improvement of list of quarantine harmful organisms of the EPPO-member states, conducting of risk analysis of sowing and planting materials, elimination, localization and planning of emergency situations, new standards prepared in plant quarantine and protection sphere and etc issues.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Agriculture Ismat Abasov declared the event open. To him, holding of this event in Baku will positively impact on development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and international organizations in phytosanitary field.

Note that, Azerbaijan is a member of EPPO since 2007. In the organization’s meeting in Paris held on September 21-22, 2010, Azerbaijan has been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the EPPO.
