02 March 2011 [12:00] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan can become partners on energy projects of Southern Corridor, Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyngulu Bagirov said in his interview to 'Neytral Turkmenistan' newspaper.

The minister recently attended an international conference 'Environmental aspects of trans-Caspian pipelines' in Ashgabat.

"Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, whose sectors in the Caspian Sea are adjacent to each other, have been working side by side for many years. Much experience has been gained, there is tremendous potential and desire to become part of the Southern Corridor. And so our countries can become partners in such projects," Bagirov said.

The Southern Energy Corridor is a priority EU energy project diversifying energy supply routes and sources and increasing EU energy security. The Southern Corridor includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), White Stream, and ITGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline).

Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have recently expressed interest in a project for laying an underwater trans-Caspian pipeline between the two countries, which could be part of the scale of the Nabucco project, aimed at the European market.

"Azerbaijan supports the future development of offshore pipelines, because now it is the most environmentally safe transportation of energy resources," said the minister in Ashgabat, noting that "the precedents of such projects exist throughout the world - the Black Sea, Baltic and other seas".
