SOCAR commissions new desalination plant on Chilov island

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has put into operation a new water desalination Ex-OSMOS on the Chilov Island in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

The devices is intended for desalination of sea water and meet the island's population's needs in the drinking and household water. The island has about 1,000 residents.

SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullayev has attended the opening ceremony.

Capacity of the new unit is 300 cubic meters of seawater per day.

Abdullayev said the island's daily demand in water is 200-250 cubic meters per day and those volumes are provided with the company's vessels.

"The new plant will create conditions for the island's population to have drinking and household water," he added.

Previously, two desalination plants "KU-200 with capacity of 200 cubic meters each was built on the island.  About 15,000 trees and shrubs were planted as part of the "Year of Environment".

Today, during the SOCAR President's visit to the island, another 1,000 trees were planted.

The Chilov field is located on the island in the southwestern waters of the Absheron archipelago, and partly in the coastal zone. The field was commissioned in 1948.

Since then 115 wells (currently, only 31 wells operate ) have been drilled on the field and 4.81 million tons of oil has been produced from it. Currently, the field's daily production is 70 tons.
