Azerbaijan Minister of Energy: We want to sell natural gas to Turkey for market price

22 May 2009 [13:11] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan seeks to charge Turkey for natural gas a price that is in line with market prices, said Azerbaijan’s Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev.
He didn’t refer to a specific price, saying “because negotiations are still under way”.

“Turkey purchases natural gas from 4 countries, namely Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Algeria. For example, Russian gas cost Turkey $450-500 [per 1,000 cubic meters] last year. And we are seeking to align our gas price with market prices,” he added.

Turkish media quoted an unnamed source early this week as saying Azerbaijan would charge Turkey about $200-$250 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, compared to $120 it charged until now.

The two countries have been in intensive negotiations on the price and volume of naturals gas Azerbaijan exports to Turkey. Turkey proposes increasing the volume of gas delivery, especially from Shah Deniz Phase 2 while Azerbaijan wants to bring prices close to market prices.
