Government not to allow bread prices' raising

13 March 2007 [13:38] - TODAY.AZ
"At present rise of prices for grain is natural case. Because every year when the grain is collected the price is cheap, but later it becomes expensive. The price for grain will not rise after it," official of Azerbaijan's Agriculture Ministry Mammad Huseynov told.

Saying there is no ground for the people to be concerned over the hike of prices, Huseynov stressed that at present there is 1 million grain reserve in Azerbaijan. The official also noted that hike of prices for grain will not influence the price of bread.

"The government will not allow bread prices to raise in any case. Some businessmen can try to reduce the weight of bread, but this is also under the control of the government. 7-8 bakeries have already been closed because of reducing the weight of bread. The analogical steps will be taken in case if someone will try to repeat it again," he said.

Annual need for grain in Azerbaijani is 1, 53 million tonnes. Nearly 1,2m is met by local products, the rest is imported.

Azerbaijan imports 700-800 000 tonnes of grain from Russia and Kazakhstan every year. Kazakhstan shares 70% of it, APA reports.
