Iranian gas exports to Nakhichevan to increase

04 March 2007 [12:59] - TODAY.AZ
A senior gas official of Azerbaijan said Friday Iran will supply 250 million cubic meters of natural gas in 2007 to the Autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan.

Alikhan Melikov, who heads the state-run Azeri Gas company, told reporters in Baku the gas export project is part of a gas-swap agreement reached earlier between Baku and Tehran.

"Under the deal Azerbaijan delivers a certain amount of gas to Iran at the Astara [border] area and Iran will export the same amount of gas to Nakhichevan," he said, adding Iran has exported a total 136 million cubic meters of natural gas to Nakhichevan since 2005.

"Iran exported 12 million cubic meters of gas to Azerbaijan in late 2005 and 44 million in 2006," he said. "The country also exported 80 million cubic meters of gas to Nakhichevan in January and February 2007."
