14 July 2006 [09:57] - TODAY.AZ
On July 13 the Georgian National Bank held a presentation ceremony for a coin minted in commemoration of the official opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

The National Bank ordered special silver, nickel and copper coins from the Mint of Poland (Mennica Polska).

"July 13 is an historic day. The strategically important energy mega-project, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, has been officially opened. It is a unique project and with it Georgia will become a really important partner for the world in energy supplies. The coining of the symbolic silver, nickel and copper coins, at the initiation of the National Bank, will help to popularize Georgia's role in this project," Roman Gotsiridze the President of Georgian National Bank said at the presentation ceremony on Thursday.

5000 coins were minted in total. 2000 are silver and the other 3000 are nickel and copper. They will be sold in branch offices of the National Bank. The silver coin costs GEL 46 and nickel and copper ones GEL 5.

"These beautiful coins are already in Ceyhan, the Georgian delegation will present them to the presidents and delegations that attend Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline opening ceremony. Everyone who wishes, Georgians and foreigners, will be able to buy them: these coins will be spread all over the world. I hope that they will gain popularity among the numismatists of the world," Gotsiridze told The Messenger on July 13.

The coin itself, deigned by Mamuka Gongadze, is very attractive; one side displays a geographic map of the region, the Caspian and Mediterranean seas and the territories of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Baku, Tbilisi, Ceyhan and the oil pipeline route is also depicted. Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan is written in Georgian and English, as well as the nominal GEL 3 value. The reverse features three oil bores and the date of coining.
