Azerbaijan, Ukraine to strengthen cooperation

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev discussed prospects of expanding cooperation in the sphere of high-quality aviation fuel supply and its possible production in Ukraine.

The parties discussed the “Turkish projects” of the company, the involvement of Ukraine in them and the prospects for the further development of the oil refining complex of the Ukrainian state.

The SOCAR President said that next year, after the end of the strategic projects in Turkey, cooperation with Ukraine will become one of the priorities, adding that for 10 years of work in Ukraine only now there are good conditions for business.

Petro Poroshenko, in turn, pointed to the strategic nature of cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

“I believe that we should take full advantage of the opportunities for development and deepening cooperation, including in the energy sector,” he said, stressing the importance of using this potential for diversifying energy supply to Ukraine.

The sides also discussed the possibility of expanding cooperation in the supply of high-quality aviation fuel and its possible production in Ukraine due to a sharp increase in passenger traffic in Ukrainian airports, in particular in Boryspil, Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odessa and other Ukrainian cities.

Earlier, SOCAR Energy Ukraine told Azernews that it plans to launch five new facilities in Ukraine in 2018.

SOCAR’s retail network includes 59 refueling complexes and two oil loading bunkers located in nine regions of Ukraine.

SOCAR entered the Ukrainian market back in 2009. The main activity of SOCAR Energy Ukraine is to improve the network of petrol filling stations and organize wholesale of petrol and oil products in the territory of Ukraine.

Azerbaijan is considered one of the main trade partners of Ukraine among the CIS countries.

Main goods imported from Ukraine to Azerbaijan remains as mainly metallurgy products, machine building products, agro-industrial products, and chemical industry products. While main goods exported from Azerbaijan to Ukraine are generally products of fuel energy industry, chemical industry products, and agro-industrial products.

The trade turnover between the states amounted to $810 million in 2017.
