02 November 2012 [19:14] - TODAY.AZ
The development plan of Greater Baku calls for construction of an additional 270,000 apartments or 1.5 million square meters of housing by 2030, the Director of Design Institute Bakidovletlayihe under the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan Ilgar Isbatov said during public discussions of the draft on Friday.

"Currently there is an estimated 47 million square meters of housing in the planned area. Today there is a need for an additional 15 million square meters of housing, given that now each person is alloted 18 square meters of housing. If you take into account that the project calls for 25 square meters per person by 2030, then we need an additional 20 million square meters of housing," Isbatov said.

He said that 630,000 apartments are now on the territory covered by the plan, while 840-910 thousand apartments will be required by 2030.

"According to the plan, it is necessary to build another 210-270 thousand apartments by 2030," Isbatov said.

He said that the economy of Greater Baku is 77.5 percent of Azerbaijan GDP, or $52.9 billion.
