Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project to be mulled in Georgia

Regional Development and Infrastructure Minister of Georgia David Narmania and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey to Georgia Levent Murat Burhan discussed bilateral relations and joint projects. According to the Ministry, the meeting was of an introductory character.

The parties paid special attention to the course of the construction of the Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway - Marabda-Tetritskaro-Tsalka-Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi railway line. Georgia implements this project jointly with Azerbaijan and Turkey.

During the meeting Narmania stressed the strategic importance of the BTK and drew particular attention to the economic benefits that the countries involved in the project will receive.

Narmania provided information about course of the construction of the Georgian section.

It is planned to construct a new 105-kilometer branch railroad within the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project. In addition, the section of the railway Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Marabda will be reconstructed in Georgia, which will increase its capacity to 15 million tons of cargo per year. It is planned to build a place in Akhalkalaki for the transition of trains from the existing train tracks in Georgia to the European one.
