
The Greek Egnatia ODOS SA has held a pre-project monitoring in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey within the preparation of the project of the Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi-Trabzon model highway, a statement posted on Wednesday on the official website of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport said. The monitoring was conducted with the participation of local experts.
Egnatia ODOS SA serves as the technical secretariat of the Black Sea Ring Highway.
The monitoring was conducted to investigate the state of the roads and the infrastructure along the roads, border crossing procedures, the infrastructure, established in this regard, and to make recommendations regarding their further development and rational organization.
The initiative on creation of the project of Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi-Trabzon model highway is linked to establishment of sound and safe environment for the development of international road transport in the framework of the Silk Road by the International Road Transport Union (IRU).
Model Highway Initiative is a real mechanism of public-private partnership that brings together efforts of the private sector and government on facilitation of trade and development of road transport, as well as the fight against corruption.
The first and main component of Model Highway Initiative is the implementation of the institutional and administrative reforms at the national level in all transition countries, with the ultimate aim to improve trade and border procedures in accordance with the UN Convention on vehicles.
The second primary component provides for a proper road infrastructure in the first place, modern border crossings and major logistics centers, gas stations and parking lots.
