'ASEAN member-states attach great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan'

Azerbaijani ambassador to Indonesia Tamerlan Gareyev has presented today his credentials to Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on his appointment as an ambassador to the ASEAN.

Mr. Pitsuwan congratulated the ambassador on his appointment and expressed success in his future activity.

“ASEAN is ready to all-round cooperation with the Azerbaijani embassy. ASEAN member countries also attach great importance to boost cooperation with Azerbaijan in various fields including political, economical, cultural and others” said ASEAN Secretary General.
In his turn, Garayev informed Mr. Pitsuwan about Azerbaijan`s geographic position, political system, history, culture and rapidly developing economy.

Speaking about the relations between Azerbaijan and ASEAN, Mr. Garayev said “the relations are of high level”. Expressing the necessity of developing ties in economical field, Garayev expressed confidence that the implementation of the planned projects will boost tightening of relations furthermore.

Mr. Garayev also spoke about Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict, saying “at present 20% of Azerbaijani lands are under occupation. More than one million people were driven out of their native lands”.

During the meeting, ASEAN Secretary General said that ASEAN supports Azerbaijanis territorial integrity and underlined importance of regulation of the conflict in frames of norms and principles of the International law.

At the end of the meeting, Tamerlan Garayev invited Mr. Pitsuwan to Azerbaijan. In his turn, Mr. Pitsuwan expressed his willingness to come to Azerbaijan in the near future.
