'Botas infrastructure may replace TANAP'

04 June 2012 [13:10] - TODAY.AZ
If TANAP gas pipeline is not ready in time, Botas infrastructure can be used to transport Azerbaijani gas, representative of the British BP in Turkey Bud Fackrell, who is also responsible for BP Turkey's activity in Azerbaijan and Georgia, has recently said in an interview with Sabah newspaper.

"The negotiations on TANAP project implementation have been successfully held with Azerbaijani side," he said. "If this gas pipeline is not ready in time, Botas infrastructure can be used."

He said that the transportation of gas from the "Shah Deniz 2" field to Europe envisages the implementation of six projects worth $ 40 billion. This is the biggest energy project which should be implemented.

Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the consortium that will build the Trans Anadolu Pipeline (TANAP) to supply gas from Shah Deniz gas field to Europe through Turkey. BOTAS has a 20 per cent stake in TANAP, while the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) holds 80 per cent in the project.

The initial capacity of the pipeline will be 16 billion cubic meters. Some 6 billion cubic meters of the volume will be supplied to Turkey, while the rest will be transported to Europe.

At present, Azerbaijan is choosing a route for gas exports to Europe via Turkey. Azerbaijan is exporting gas to Turkey via the South Caucasus gas pipeline.
