23 December 2010 [19:47] - Today.Az
Next year Azerbaijan can produce about 2.5 million tons of grain, which will exceed the figures of this year, the Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Ismet Abasov said.
"Despite this, production volumes in the coming years will increase, and a clear evidence of it are the production volumes in 2009, when 3 million tons was produced," Abasov said.
Commenting on the abolition of VAT on grain imports from Dec.1, 2010, the minister said that this step has been taken to prevent the artificial increase in bread prices.
"In the future abolition of VAT will create conditions so that price increase in grain importing countries does not affect the increase in the cost of bread in Azerbaijan," the minister said.
According to him, a need for grain import next year will also remain, as it is necessary to create reserves in the country in order to get its own products.
Azerbaijan's needs in grain is 3 million tons, but some part of area under crops remained under water as a result of the natural disaster in the Aran (central) part of the country in spring of 2010, so the volume of grain production in the country fell, compared to last year, when a record volume of production was reached. As of Dec.1 the country produced 1,864,200 tons of grain.
