Modern car and motorbike tracks needed in Azerbaijan

07 March 2012 [09:36] - TODAY.AZ
In contrast to the 1970s and 80s when Azerbaijani motocross won gold and silver medals in USSR competitions, which was directly followed by considerable attention to motosport, motosport is almost forgotten in Azerbaijan now, Head of the MotoBaku motorbiking club Anar Abbasov said

“I will say more: no one reports the victories of local bikers in various local and international competitions. Yet, these victories are produced not by, but despite the situation in Azerbaijani motosport.

2012 has been announced the Year of Sport in Azerbaijan, so it would be entirely appropriate and logical to work towards promoting motor sport in the country. I would very much like to see the revival and development of motor sport of all kinds, both driving and motorbiking, he said.

Azerbaijan has long needed the construction of international-standard car and motorbike tracks. “I’m convinced that it will be the first of the three South Caucasus countries to build an auto and motorcycling track and will be able to attract the attention of millions of fans of this sport worldwide.

This would give a huge impetus to the development of motor tourism, attracting riders from various countries. Moreover, there is the potential for annual prestigious competitions in car and motorcycle sport in the country, which in turn increase the image of the state and develop its tourism industry, Abbasov noted.
