Moratorium on sturgeon fishing in Caspian is necessary

The agreement on a sturgeon fishing moratorium in the Caspian Sea can be reached within a year, the Senior Consultant at the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry’s department of rehabilitation and protection of bio-resources and permanent member of the Commission on Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea, Tariel Mammadli, said.

Mammadli said that the achievement of this agreement becomes a necessity, because the number of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea decreases from year to year. "The number of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea decreased by 10 percent for last ten years," he said. "Therefore, the agreement on a moratorium is necessary. It may be reached within one year."

Mammadli said that Azerbaijan has already made proposals regarding the details of the agreement. "Other Caspian littoral countries will express their views and a general conclusion will be made," he said. "Then, a working group will work over some details."
