A group of experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit Armenia on May 14 to examine Matsamor nuclear power plant, director of the Azerbaijan Radiation Problems Institute Adil Garibov said. He said this examination would have a fact-finding character.
The institute director said such examinations are conducted in every 4-5 years and he doesn’t hope that depending on the results of this examination they will make any step satisfying Azerbaijan. "The use of nuclear energy is a sovereign right of every country. But we propose to reconsider this issue. It needs first to learn the impact of the nuclear reactors on environment and then to identify what damages could lead to possible accidents in neighbor countries. The nuclear power plants must be built with consent of the neighbor countries".
Garibov said there are 150-160 billion tonnes of oil and 160 trillion cubic meters of natural gas resources in the world. "Annual oil output is 3.2-3.5 billion tonnes and gas output – about 3 billion cubic meters in our country and probably Azerbaijan will need in atomic energy about 50 years later".
