Azerbaijani Transport Ministry prepares for dredging operations in new port

The Dutch company Van Oord BV will conduct dredging in the area of water where a new international sea trade port will be situated in the village of Alat, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said in an interview posted on the ruling New Azerbaijan Party’s website. Preparatory work has started this year.

According to him, earlier Van Oord BV and OJSC Azerkorpu won the tender for conducting dredging of the entrance channel and the shunting area of water of the new port area and preparation of the area for construction work.

Earlier the Dutch Royal Haskoning Company developed a general plan and a working draft of the complex on the order of the Transport Ministry. Some 8.2 million manat was spent for it, 3.2 million manat of which was spent in 2010.

The new international sea port in the Alat settlement will be constructed in three stages and will be completed by 2015. The first stage of the project envisages the construction of two bridges for ferry boats, three freight bridges for containers, Ro-Ro ships and simple (universal) dry cargo ships. The second stage of the project envisages the construction of three other freight bridges. And the third stage of the project envisages the construction of two additional freight bridges. The project is worth over $400 million.After the port is finished its capacity will be 11.6 million tons of cargo.

The port will be multimodal because it will create a free economic zone and a logistic center.
