More child suicide recorded in Azerbaijan

Approximately 28 cases of child suicide were registered in 2011. The figure hits 29 cases for the first half of 2012, deputy chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Aynur Sofiyeva told Trend on Wednesday.

The number of suicide cases among women was 87 in 2011 and 33 cases for the six months of 2012.

The cause of suicide is a psychological problem on the basis of domestic violence, Sofiyeva added.

She added that roughly 8,139 cases of violence against women and children were registered in Azerbaijan for the past five years.

There were 87 cases of violence against children in 2011 and 19 cases for six months in 2012.

Roughly 4,280 crimes were committed on the basis of the violence against women in 2011. The figure hit 2,119 in the first half of 2012.

Roughly 1,957 cases of domestic violence against women were registered in 2011. Roughly 820 committed crimes were registered for the six months of 2012.

She said that these figures testify to the problems with executing the law on "Prevention of Domestic Violence" and the inadequate level of public awareness on the issue.

She stressed that representatives from the relevant bodies conduct events on the territory of Azerbaijan.

The problems with executing the law are revealed at these events and the measures are taken to resolve them.
