French archaeologists study necropolis in Azerbaijan

The Archaeology and Ethnography Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the French National Center for Scientific Research and the National Museum of Saint-Germain started archaeological research in Lerik region of Azerbaijan (325 km from Baku) under Study of the Morgan Heritage Project.

 
Today, the team carries out excavations in the necropolis burials in stone boxes relating to the early 1st Millennium BC, located in the village Kravelabi Lerik region,  expedition member Anar Agalarzade told Trend.


"The burials in stone boxes are important historical statues, which can give information about the rich history of the southern region of Azerbaijan. During the studies, we expect to find archaeological materials reflecting the material and spiritual culture of the era, burial customs and religious beliefs, he said .
 
The discovered archaeological materials will be shown in the scientific exposition at the Archaeological Fund of the Archaeology and Ethnography Institute.
 
Following the research, there will be organized an international exhibition, which will feature samples of the material culture of Azerbaijan.
 
Agalarzade said the French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan in the late 19th century, conducted archaeological excavations in the southeastern region of Azerbaijan, and took the findings to Paris. In this regard, Within this framework, examples of culture that now  in Paris will be involved in the  research.
