FM: Iran ready for fair talks on its nuclear program

25 May 2011 [17:18] - TODAY.AZ
Iran is always ready for fair and just talks on its nuclear activities based on mutual respect, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, IRNA reported.

Addressing the 16th ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states here on Wednesday, he stressed that Iran was determined to defend and use its rights while respecting conventions banning mass killing weapons.

He appreciated the support of the NAM member states for Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities and said such backing was in fact beneficial for all member states in making use of nuclear energy.

He further pointed out that during the last conference to review the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran together with other NAM members proposed a legal framework with a definite timetable to fully exploit the 6th article of the convention which demands total elimination of nuclear arms by 2025.

He said Israel’s refusal to join the treaty has resulted in a situation where Iran’s 1974 proposal on the establishment of a zone in the Middle East free of nuclear arms not be materialized.

Salehi arrived in Bali, Indonesia, early Wednesday.

During the 2-day meeting, the foreign ministers are to approve the draft document of the movement’s future outlook.

At the end of the meeting, rotating chairmanship of the NAM will be handed over to Iran from Egypt.

The 16th summit meeting of NAM will be held in Tehran next year.
